My Dad, My Hero

A book about a first responder family and PTSD

CODE 9 KIDS Books

AUSTRALIAN-FIRST CHILDREN’S BOOK EXPLAINS PTSD SUPPORTING FIRST RESPONDERS AND THEIR FAMILIES

The Code 9 Foundation is proud to announce the release of an Australian-first children’s book, designed to help families of all first responders open up conversations about post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental injuries. With 10% of professional first responders experiencing PTSD and similar mental health challenges due to the nature of their work, this groundbreaking book provides an accessible and compassionate resource for children and families to understand these often complex issues.

Professional first responders - fire fighters, police, ambulance and 000 operators - face extraordinary pressures in the line of duty. The mental toll of witnessing and hearing traumatic events can lead to long-term emotional injuries, which affect not only the individuals but also their loved ones. The Code 9 Foundation's new book helps bridge the gap in understanding by explaining PTSD and its impact in a way that is approachable for children.

"We know the mental health toll on first responders is significant, yet it’s often difficult to talk about in families, especially with children," said Mark Thomas, Co-Founder of The Code 9 Foundation. "Our hope is that this book will provide a starting point for these important conversations, offering support and understanding to the families who need it most. Our mission is to ensure that current and veteran professional fire fighters, police, ambulance and 000 operators who are all represented in the book and their families know that ‘You’re Never Alone’.

Help kids better understand PTSD and show a first responder that they're your hero!

The book not only explains the symptoms and challenges associated with PTSD but also encourages children to ask questions and share their own feelings. By addressing mental injuries in a family context, The Code 9 Foundation aims to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and promote healing through communication and shared experiences.

As part of The Code 9 Foundation’s commitment to supporting Australia’s professional serving and veteran first responder community, this children’s book represents a vital step toward improving mental health awareness and care for those who sacrifice so much for the safety of others.

If you know someone who's family could benefit from learning about mental injury and how it impacts on first responders and their children.

Show your first responder that they're your hero!
